{"id":1033,"date":"2008-12-27T11:41:26","date_gmt":"2008-12-27T16:41:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pmedicine.org\/epatients\/?p=1033"},"modified":"2009-01-16T11:11:06","modified_gmt":"2009-01-16T16:11:06","slug":"women-and-health-care-disparities-who-dies-and-who-profits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/2008\/12\/women-and-health-care-disparities-who-dies-and-who-profits.html","title":{"rendered":"Women and Health Care Disparities:  Who Dies and Who Profits?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are women dying of cancer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.liebertonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1089\/152460900318920?cookieSet=1&amp;journalCode=jwh.1\">in the same way they die of heart disease<\/a>, because physicians trivialize their complaints and <a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/archives\/2008\/12\/in-the-spin-ii-you-and-your-billing-code.html\">they are powerless to get second opinions<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>How many decades has it taken for cardiologists, practitioners at the apex of medicine,\u00a0to acknowledge that symptoms of heart disease for women may differ from those for men, and for general practitioners to address that fact?\u00a0 Older women die of heart disease\u00a0in droves because they are treated too late or ineffectually, or they cannot get the referral.\u00a0 How long does it take for the public to catch on, or has it?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>What is the percentage of women in lucrative cardiology and radiology practices?\u00a0 (Have you ever met a female cardiologist?)\u00a0 Who are the star patients of the new &#8220;concierge&#8221; cardiologists?<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s health-and-spirituality movements tend to bypass the system.\u00a0 Why play on an uneven field?\u00a0 This is not the same thing as insisting on quality care, however, or documenting unnecessary\u00a0deaths due to systemic negligence.\u00a0 Who would support a study of gender bias in\u00a0cancer detection?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/ama\/pub\/category\/1810.html\">The American Medical Association<\/a>?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aafp.org\/online\/en\/home.html\">The American Academy of Family Physicians<\/a>?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acr.org\/\">The American College of Radiology<\/a>?\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asco.org\/portal\/site\/ASCO\/\">The American Society of Clinical Oncology<\/a>?\u00a0 (Try an affirmative action head count on their boards of trustees.\u00a0 Then compare with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.acc.org\/index.htm\">The American College of Cardiology<\/a>.)\u00a0 How about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\/\">The National Institutes of Health<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\">The Centers for Disease Control<\/a>?\u00a0\u00a0Physicians cannot acknowledge\u00a0diagnostic error\u00a0to their patients due to fear of lawsuits, they claim, so who is it who finally reports?<\/p>\n<p>This is the one-two punch from the patient&#8217;s perspective (keeping in mind the\u00a0gold standard in cancer treatment is early detection.)\u00a0 First, the physician brushes aside complaints and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consultmagazine.net\/storyview.asp?storyid=271095&amp;sectionsource=s2837\">belittles\u00a0patient concerns<\/a>.\u00a0 Second, the insurance industry encourages <a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/archives\/2008\/11\/in-the-spin-death-by-referral.html\">referral madness<\/a>, making it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/03\/23\/AR2007032301559.html\">nigh impossible to get a qualified second opinion<\/a>, or, in the case of breast cancer,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.breastcancer.org\/symptoms\/testing\/new_research\/20061130b.jsp\">even to know what that means<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Breast cancer patients are apparently\u00a0familiar with this scenario, as are mothers of children with\u00a0cancer.\u00a0 A chilling thought, indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Who dies and who profits?<\/p>\n<p>The most glaring disparity in health care delivery may be staring us right in the face.\u00a0 Worse yet, it may have nothing to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/archives\/2008\/10\/health-20-the-widening-digital-divide-a-call-to-action.html\">the digital divide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are women dying of cancer\u00a0in the same way they die of heart disease, because physicians trivialize their complaints and they are powerless to get second opinions?
