For more, see:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Static-Pages\/Trend-Data\/Device-Ownership.aspx\">Gadget Ownership<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Topics\/Topic-Category-3\/Mobile.aspx\">Pew Internet: Mobile<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Online health information search:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>80% of internet users, or\u00a059% of U.S. adults,\u00a0look online for health information.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This\u00a0is based on a September 2010 survey, but it is a remarkably stable trend dating back to 2002. For more, see:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2011\/HealthTopics.aspx\">Health Topics<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Commentary\/2011\/October\/Who-Doesnt-Gather-Health-Information-Online.aspx\">Who Doesn\u2019t Gather Health Information Online?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>17% of cell phone owners, or 15% of adults,\u00a0have used their phone to look up health or medical information.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This finding is of particular interest to those interested in trends related to young people, Latinos, and African Americans, since these groups are significantly more likely than other groups\u00a0to have mobile internet access. For more, see:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2011\/HealthTopics\/Part-4.aspx\">summary charts<\/a> of health topics.<\/p>\n<p>Also,\u00a0keep in mind that the typical search for health information is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2011\/Social-Life-of-Health-Info\/Part-2\/Section-4.aspx\">on behalf of someone else<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; information access by proxy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peer-to-peer healthcare:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pew Internet is tracking overall trends in how the internet is changing people\u2019s relationships with health information and with each other.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don\u2019t know, but I can try to find out&#8221; is the default setting for people with health questions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>34% of internet users, or 25% of U.S. adults, have read someone else\u2019s commentary or experience about health or medical issues on an online news group, website, or blog.<\/li>\n<li>24% of internet users, or 18% of adults, have consulted online reviews of particular drugs or medical treatments.<\/li>\n<li>18% of internet users, or 13% of adults, have gone online to find others who might have health concerns similar to theirs. People living with chronic and rare conditions are significantly more likely to do this.
