{"id":12621,"date":"2012-07-12T09:54:50","date_gmt":"2012-07-12T13:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pmedicine.org\/epatients\/?p=12621"},"modified":"2012-07-23T21:27:16","modified_gmt":"2012-07-24T01:27:16","slug":"caregivers-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/2012\/07\/caregivers-online.html","title":{"rendered":"Caregivers Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new Pew Internet\/California HealthCare Foundation report is out today: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/Reports\/2012\/Caregivers-online.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Family Caregivers Online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I thought I&#8217;d give some background on why we did the study and a few key take-aways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caregivers are alpha geeks of health care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>30% of U.S. adults are currently caring for a loved one and it cuts across most demographic groups. We all have a good chance of playing that role some day.<\/p>\n<p>As a researcher, I try to identify \u201clead users\u201d of technology because it\u2019s a shortcut to insights about the future. I spend a lot of time talking with people living with rare disease, for example, as well as moms of young kids with health issues because I see them as the <a href=\"http:\/\/itc.conversationsnetwork.org\/shows\/detail197.html\" target=\"_blank\">alpha geeks<\/a> of social tech in health (to borrow Tim O&#8217;Reilly&#8217;s phrase). Caregivers fit in to that category since they are on the front lines of health care (holding the system together like duct tape, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sterlinghealthit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MaryAnne Sterling<\/a> puts it).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Caregivers are voracious information consumers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t surprised to see that caregivers are more likely to seek info on dementia or long-term care. That\u2019s intuitive. But look at the margins on some of the other topics we included in the survey:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2012\/07\/Health-topics.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12632\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2012\/07\/Health-topics.jpg\" alt=\"Health information patterns among caregivers vs. non-caregivers\" width=\"500\" height=\"596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2012\/07\/Health-topics.jpg 500w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2012\/07\/Health-topics-251x300.jpg 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2012\/07\/Health-topics.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caregivers do their health care homework<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One surprise for me was how actively caregivers seek out health care reviews and ratings. As an example, they are the most likely group to look at drug reviews online \u2013 38% vs. 18% of other internet users. And it\u2019s not just because of their other demographic characteristics. We identified a \u201ccaregiver difference\u201d in the data. This has implications for health care providers and businesses seeking to reach an aging population \u2013 caregivers might be their best target market.<\/p>\n<p>We are at the beginning of a serious aging trend in the U.S. and at the beginning of a trend toward asking people to act more like consumers. There are going to be more elders in need and more health care choices in the coming years. This research shows that their loved ones not only shoulder the responsibility for physical care-taking, but for decision-making, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caregivers know how to network<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another aspect I loved reporting was how social caregivers are when it comes to seeking help from friends, family, and people who are in the same health situation. Details are in the report section entitled \u201cIn the moment of need.\u201d For example, 70% of caregivers say that the last time they had a health issue they turned to their friends and family members, either online or offline.
