He&#8217;s just published a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jopm.org\/opinion\/editorials\/2014\/05\/14\/i-no-longer-have-to-go-to-see-the-doctor-how-the-patient-portal-is-changing-medical-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\">brief but important editorial<\/a> in the journal. The result is <strong>a cumbersome system<\/strong> that <strong>most patients avoid using<\/strong> unless there is a major problem or crisis to address.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But, since recently introducing the patient portal in our electronic medical record, <strong>my practice has changed substantially.<\/strong> My patients tell me it\u2019s for the better. Admittedly, there is the additional daily burden of responding to lab results, refill requests, and patient questions. But each of these is also a major improvement in efficiency and effectiveness of information flow, which is fundamental for any patient who aspires to be \u201c&#8217;participatory.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He goes on to describe the challenges as well as the benefits.<\/p>\n<p>If you (patient or provider) are starting to use a portal, I suggest you print this editorial and share\u00a0it with\u00a0others:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Patients:\u00a0<\/strong>Share it with your clinicians as an example of someone who&#8217;s on the front lines, working at it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Providers:<\/strong> Share it with peers as a platform for discussion of both the challenges and the benefits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>&#8220;Long ago my boss told me&#8230;&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Charlie&#8217;s editorial vividly recalled for me an event I spoke at earlier this month, the HCI\u00a0Summit sponsored by <em>Healthcare Informatics<\/em>\u00a0magazine and its parent Vendome Media. Another speaker was Russ Branzell, CEO of the informatics executive organization <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio-chime.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">CHIME<\/a>. In his talk he said that once when he was in sales he had a boss who said that any doctor he talked to would want to know this:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Did you save me, or cost me, time?<\/li>\n<li>Did you save me, or cost me, money?<\/li>\n<li>Did you make my patients better or worse?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And, his boss said, for almost all doctors #3 trumps #1 and 2.<\/p>\n<p>A patient portal, with secure messaging and patient access to information,\u00a0<em>is\u00a0<\/em>the right thing to do. It&#8217;s a feature that&#8217;s built into all medical record systems; the practice only needs to say &#8220;Yes, switch it on.&#8221; After all, as SPM co-founder Dr Danny Sands says, &#8220;How can patients participate if they can&#8217;t see the information?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Charlie is also on Twitter as <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/eDocAmerica\" target=\"_blank\">@eDocAmerica<\/a>, the <a href=\"eDocAmerica.com%20\" target=\"_blank\">eDocAmerica.com <\/a>website.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SPM co-founder Charlie Smith (Charles W.
