You can check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/SusannahFox\/communicating-the-experience-of-illness-in-the-dig\" target=\"_blank\">Storify<\/a>, which lists our ongoing series of blog posts (this one is the second &#8212; Pam <a href=\"http:\/\/pamressler.blogspot.ca\/2014\/07\/2014-medicine-x-communicating.html\" target=\"_blank\">kicked it off<\/a> on her blog last week.)<\/p>\n<p>I thought I&#8217;d share some historical context. Because really, none of what we plan to discuss is new. It&#8217;s ancient. People have always gathered together to share what they know about health and illness, hoping to help and learn from others. What&#8217;s new is that we have the ability to expand our networks, inject more data and background resources into the conversation, and then archive them for later searching or other use.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For example, in 1999, Tom Ferguson, MD, fielded a small-sample survey of people who were using online health discussion forums, asking them to rate the resources available to them for 12 dimensions of medical care. It seems like magic, especially if you\u2019re new to\u00a0peer-to-peer health care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 1.625em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #373737; line-height: 24px; background-color: #ffffff;\">It is cases like this one which inspired me, in 2011, to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #b34313; border: 0px; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/2011\/02\/28\/peer-to-peer-health-care-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a>, \u201cThe internet gives patients and caregivers access not only to information, but also to each other.\u201d It is also\u00a0why I\u00a0tell people, \u201cthe most exciting innovation of the connected health era is people talking with each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\">\n<p style=\"border: 0px; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 1.625em; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #373737; line-height: 24px;\">There is no such thing as over-sharing when you are pursuing hope\u00a0\u201clike it\u2019s an outlaw\u201d (to quote <a href=\"http:\/\/afternoonnapsociety.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Afternoon Napper<\/a>).
