Woohoo!<\/p>\n<p>The lede:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Scientists regularly sign up patients in clinical trials to test new treatments. Now, they are seeking patients to help them design some of those trials.<\/p>\n<p>Patients and researchers can bring different perspectives to treating disease &#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/design-power-patients-play-researchers-in-drug-trials-1412034067\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9063\" src=\"http:\/\/www.epatientdave.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/WSJ-pts-as-researchers.jpg\" alt=\"Screen capture of Wall Street Journal\" width=\"601\" height=\"452\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It seems clear that medicine is starting to act on the Institute of Medicine&#8217;s mandate in\u00a0<em>Best Care at Lower Cost<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A learning healthcare system is anchored on patient needs and perspectives.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t this dovetail deliciously with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epatientdave.com\/2014\/09\/28\/how-early-should-patient-voices-be-heard-in-the-research-process\/#more-8985\" target=\"_blank\">the presentation I blogged about<\/a>\u00a0on my own site, on involving patients earlier in the research process?? Imagine: Scientists asking patients what they think is important!<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, science is starting to act on the realization that patients are no longer the passive beneficiaries\u00a0of what scientists think. \u00a0(It also matches nicely Laura Landro&#8217;s front page WSJ piece in June, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/articles\/health-care-providers-want-patients-to-read-medical-records-spot-errors-1402354902\" target=\"_blank\">Health-Care Providers Want Patients to Read Medical Records, Spot Errors<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is a major shift in the wind, and it&#8217;s spreading.
