{"id":17106,"date":"2015-02-24T10:25:41","date_gmt":"2015-02-24T15:25:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pmedicine.org\/epatients\/?p=17106"},"modified":"2015-02-24T10:26:56","modified_gmt":"2015-02-24T15:26:56","slug":"demanding-patient-myth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/2015\/02\/demanding-patient-myth.html","title":{"rendered":"Mythbusting, &#8220;demanding patient&#8221; edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;d bet good money that anyone who identifies as an e-patient has been led to believe that their desire to participate actively in their medical care marks them as a &#8220;demanding patient.&#8221; The perception of demanding patients is that they&#8217;re behaving like spoiled divas at a medi-spa, with their demands driving up incidence of unnecessary or inappropriate care.<\/p>\n<p>That myth is now officially busted, in no less a method than a <a title=\"JAMA Onco \" href=\"http:\/\/oncology.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=2108852&amp;resultClick=3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>study published in JAMA Oncology<\/strong><\/a>. In an <a title=\"JAMA Onco op-ed\" href=\"http:\/\/oncology.jamanetwork.com\/article.aspx?articleid=2108844\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>accompanying op-ed<\/strong><\/a>, Dr. Anthony L. Back says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In this issue of JAMA Oncology, Gogineni and colleagues report on their empirical inquiry into patient demands, a nemesis that proves to be more mythical than real. The study hypothesis\u2014that patient demands for treatments and scans drove unnecessary costs\u2014was spectacularly unconfirmed when using data collected from physicians themselves.
