{"id":17506,"date":"2015-06-19T10:01:08","date_gmt":"2015-06-19T14:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pmedicine.org\/epatients\/?p=17506"},"modified":"2015-06-19T10:01:08","modified_gmt":"2015-06-19T14:01:08","slug":"the-role-of-dignity-in-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/2015\/06\/the-role-of-dignity-in-health-care.html","title":{"rendered":"The Role of Dignity in Health Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/06\/098.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-17507 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/06\/098-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"098\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/06\/098-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/06\/098-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/06\/098-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nEvery patient wants to be treated with dignity.\u00a0 However, when you are sitting in a doctor\u2019s exam room, holding together a hospital gown that somehow does not want to completely fit around you, or close properly, it is difficult to feel that you have any dignity.\u00a0 When the doctor comes into the room and barely listens to you or looks at you, while he or she is checking your health record on the computer, it also feels as though you do not have much dignity.\u00a0 When the doctor explains the treatment options for your problem and does not take the time to listen to you analyze your issues, a culture of dignity is missing from this interaction.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Donna Hicks, PhD, an associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, has worked for over a decade in the field of international conflict resolution and has published a sentinel book called <strong>Dignity, It&#8217;s Essential Role in Resolving Conflict. <\/strong>Although the book is focused on a culture of dignity in the workplace, there are many parallels that are essential to health care organizations and health care professionals who strive to offer quality care.<\/p>\n<p>The ten elements of dignity that Dr. Hicks outlines in her book, so relevant in a health care setting include:<br \/>\n1.\u00a0Acceptance of every person\u2019s individuality and identity.<br \/>\n2.\u00a0Inclusion \u2013 making people feel they belong.<br \/>\n3.\u00a0Safety \u2013 putting people at ease.<br \/>\n4.\u00a0Acknowledgment -giving people full attention by listening, hearing, validating and responding to their concerns, feelings and experiences.<br \/>\n5.\u00a0Recognition \u2013 validating others for their personal traits and talents.<br \/>\n6.\u00a0Fairness \u2013 Treating people equally.<br \/>\n7.\u00a0Benefit of the doubt \u2013 trusting people.<br \/>\n8.\u00a0Understanding \u2013 believing what others think matters.<br \/>\n9.\u00a0Independence \u2013 Encouraging people to act on their own behalf \u2013 empowerment.<br \/>\n10.\u00a0Accountability \u2013 taking responsibility for actions.<\/p>\n<p>There are a plethora of patient stories where doctors ignore the patient\u2019s point of view or explanation of what is wrong. There are frequent instances when doctors in the exam room fail to communicate with their patients or even look them in the eye. There are countless times when intentionally or unintentionally healthcare professionals strip away a patient\u2019s sense of dignity by patronizing them.<\/p>\n<p>Duncan Cross, a patient who has suffered with Crohns disease for a number of years wrote a blog post that describes his first-time encounter with a new gastroenterologist.\u00a0 He talks about this physician\u2019s attitude.\u00a0 This blog, \u00a0<em>\u201cI Sent This Letter to a Doctor Who Pissed Me Off,\u201d<\/em> was posted on e-patients.net on June 3, and you can read it here.\u00a0 What Duncan advocates is the essence of what it means for healthcare professionals \u2013 doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, therapists and physician assistants to treat patients with dignity.<\/p>\n<p>So how do physicians and hospitals consciously create a culture that incorporates the ten elements of dignity?\u00a0 The answer lies in discussing this issue and educating people in the fact that Dignity Matters.<\/p>\n<p>At Mount Auburn Hospital, in Cambridge, MA, the <strong>Dignity Matters <\/strong>\u00a0campaign was \u00a0launched last year.\u00a0 The goal was to instill in everyone from the Executive Suite to the Environmental Services \u00a0department,\u00a0the importance of\u00a0dignity. Initiated by the past president of the Mount Auburn\u00a0Medical Staff, \u00a0Dr. Anne d\u2019Avenas, the program was launched with a series of workshops consisting of\u00a0presentations\/discussions, followed by breakout sessions which focused on various scenarios that illustrate lessons learned about treating colleagues, patients, family and visitors with dignity.\u00a0 Dispensing buttons, posters and flyers throughout all of Mount Auburn\u2019s affiliated offices, the Dignity Matters campaign is visible. There is a plan to incorporate Dignity Matters into the Mount Auburn web site as well.<\/p>\n<p>Hospitals and physician practices throughout the country need to emulate this worthwhile program.<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s stressful world it is difficult to maintain a culture of compassion and respect throughout the health care system. It is even more challenging to improve the patient experience and increase satisfaction by insuring that we are all treated with the dignity each of us is automatically entitled
