Three conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Dramatic change is occurring in healthcare where patients, \u201cthe true trans\u00adformers in care\u201d, are changing the playing field, and redefining how they want to engage and affect change.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17623\" style=\"width: 374px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17623\" class=\"  wp-image-17623\" src=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/IMG_5962-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/IMG_5962-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/IMG_5962.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Walking Gallery in Grantsville, MD.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\" target=\"_blank\">Society for Participatory Medicine<\/a> is a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the concept of participatory medicine, a movement in which networked patients shift from being mere passengers to responsible drivers of their health, and in which providers encourage and value them as full partners.<\/p>\n<p>The Society for Participatory Medicine created a <a href=\"http:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/about\/patient-travel-scholarships\/\">patie<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/about\/patient-travel-scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\">nt travel scholarship<\/a> in 2012 to help support the attendance of patients at health conferences to help move the needle in advancing participatory medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, five patients were awarded the opportunity to attend the following conferences:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17625\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17625\" class=\"wp-image-17625 \" src=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/Cinderblocks2Image-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/Cinderblocks2Image-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/Cinderblocks2Image-768x1024.png 768w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/Cinderblocks2Image-800x1067.png 800w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/Cinderblocks2Image.png 975w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17625\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cinderblocks2 image painted by Regina Holiday.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/cinderblocks2-tickets-6811480321\" target=\"_blank\">Cinderblocks 2<\/a>, which was held on June 4-6, 2015 in Grantsville, MD and organized by Regina Holliday<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctors20.com\" target=\"_blank\">Doctors 2.0 &amp; You<\/a> , which was held on June 4-5, 2015 in Paris, France and organized by Denise Silber<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/healthdatapalooza.org\" target=\"_blank\">Health Datapalooza<\/a>, which was held on May 31-June 3, 2015 in Washington, DC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Five patients, who face various chronic conditions, traveled from the US, Spain and South Africa to attend these conferences, alongside clinicians, policy makers, advocates, and other\u00a0key \u00a0stakeholders. The patients&#8217; unique perspectives were invaluable, as their powerful voices were recognized, heard and embraced by others in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was my honor to work with the Society for Participatory Medicine again to create patient travel scholarships, \u201c said Regina Holliday, a patient activist, whose persistent fundraising skills and dedication to this initiative have made it a success. \u201cWe need patients attending conferences just as much as we need patients hosting conferences. \u00a0It is really refreshing and inspiring to view the world of medicine through a patient&#8217;s view.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s it like to attend these prominent conferences through the lens of a patient?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17624\" style=\"width: 209px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17624\" class=\"wp-image-17624 \" src=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/IMG_5788-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/IMG_5788-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/IMG_5788-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-17624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;My Medicine&#8221;, A Walking Gallery jacket created for Carly Medosch by Regina Holliday<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Carly Medosch is a chronic illness patient and advocate, who by day is a program analyst in Washington, DC., and by night is a support group leader. Carly shares her experiences <a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2015\/07\/Scholarship-Allows-Patient-to-Attend-Cinderblocks2-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nuria Z\u00fa\u00f1iga is a lupus patient and advocate living in Spain, who is also a blogger, that uses her articles and public speaking to help shed light on her condition. Nuria shares her experiences <a href=\"http:\/\/tulupusesmilupus.com\/2015\/05\/01\/doctors-2-0-you-why-do-i-want-to-go-to\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa Carter is\u00a0a facial difference ePatient and digital activist in South Africa. \u00a0She has been developing an online collaborative community, which she hopes will improve the connected health \u00a0infrastructure. Vanessa shares her experiences <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doctors20.com\/2015\/06\/29\/guest-blogpost-south-african-underdog-gained-doctors-2-0-doctors20-vanessa-carter\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every patient attendee is a joy and a source of inspiration.\u00a0And it&#8217;s reciprocal. Patients tell us how much \u00a0the respect they receive via our community, contributes to their health and well-being. \u00a0We can&#8217;t thank you enough at the Society for Parti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adtory Medicine, &#8221; says Denise Silber,\u00a0organizer of Doctors 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>The expertise of the patient is being sought after at conferences globally, yet this is still not mainstream, so I leave you with two <strong>action items<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are a patient that has attended a health conference, consider submitting a blog post, whether supported by an SPM travel scholarship or not!
