(We <a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/archives\/2012\/10\/opennotes-the-results-are-in-great-news-for-patient-engagement.html\" target=\"_blank\">blogged about the original results<\/a> in 2012.)<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"http:\/\/qualitysafety.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2016\/05\/18\/bmjqs-2015-004697.abstract\" target=\"_blank\">a new study in BMJ Quality &amp; Safety<\/a> adds the results of a follow-up survey examining the effects of OpenNotes on the patient-clinician relationship. Excerpts from the abstract (in British English spelling):<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Background:<\/strong> Patient advocates and safety experts encourage adoption of transparent health records, but\u00a0sceptics worry that shared notes may offend patients, erode trust or promote defensive medicine. As electronic health records disseminate, such disparate views fuel policy debates about risks and benefits of sharing visit notes with patients through portals.\u00a0&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusions:<\/strong> Despite concerns &#8230; transparent notes overall did not harm the patient\u2013doctor relationship. Rather, doctors and patients perceived relational benefits. &#8230;\u00a0Traditionally more vulnerable populations &#8230; may be particularly likely to feel better about their doctor after reading their notes. &#8230; the findings suggest transparent records may improve patient satisfaction, trust and safety.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As we&#8217;ve often said, that&#8217;s an\u00a0<em>amazing\u00a0<\/em>set of benefits for the simple cultural change of letting patients see what clinicians put in the chart! That&#8217;s our point.<\/p>\n<h3>The e-patient takeaway:<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16229 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2014\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-05-01-at-8.46.43-PM.png\" alt=\"open-notes logo\" width=\"266\" height=\"97\" data-wp-pid=\"16229\" \/>Study after study confirms the benefits of OpenNotes. \u00a0Help change the world: millions of American patients have open notes,\u00a0but most don&#8217;t, nor do most of the world&#8217;s patients.
