That&#8217;s exactly like asking whether email is fast &#8220;or&#8221; has scammers.<\/li>\n<li>Who gets to\u00a0<em>say\u00a0<\/em>whether a site proved useful to the patient?<\/li>\n<li>Why the hell were no\u00a0<em>e-patients\u00a0<\/em>among the sources interviewed? (See the red boxes in the top image.)\n<ul>\n<li>C&#8217;mon,\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>, do you really not know about peer-to-peer healthcare, as <a href=\"http:\/\/dave.pt\/pewhealthtips\" target=\"_blank\">documented by Pew Research<\/a> and as practiced at places like <a href=\"http:\/\/smartpatients.com\" target=\"_blank\">SmartPatients.com<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/inspire.com\" target=\"_blank\">Inspire.com<\/a> and more?<\/li>\n<li>This isn&#8217;t just an &#8220;uppity patient&#8221; complaint; in 2012 the Institute of Medicine said healthcare should be &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/archives\/2013\/02\/partnering-with-patients-about-patient-centered-research-methods.html\" target=\"_blank\">anchored on patient needs and perspectives<\/a>.&#8221; So what the hell are we doing four years later discussing this question with no patient voices??<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Besides, given the <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonmonthly.com\/2016\/07\/21\/the-untold-crisis-in-medical-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">well documented giant cracks<\/a> in the research and peer review processes, we could ask the same question about peer reviewed literature:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Does <em>&#8220;authoritative&#8221; peer reviewed literature<\/em> add to\u00a0<em>doctors&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>knowledge, or\u00a0dangerously misinform them?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For compelling counterpoints, see the patient comments on <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/googlemug\" target=\"_blank\">our Google Mug post<\/a> last December.)<\/p>\n<p>Please, all, dive in, read, and comment.\u00a0<em>So\u00a0<\/em>many assumptions are hidden behind that headline&#8217;s question, not to mention their choice of whom to interview.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to @SusanCarr, the highly patient-centered editor of\u00a0Patient Safety &amp; Quality Healthcare, for this tipoff this morning.
