To commemorate and promote his values, in last year&#8217;s conference program we included this block:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Doc-Tom-standing.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-20777\" src=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Doc-Tom-standing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Doc-Tom-standing.jpg 365w, https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/Doc-Tom-standing-146x300.jpg 146w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Coming in 2018: the \u201cDoc Tom\u201d Award<\/h2>\n<p>Our Society was created in 2009 to honor and continue the work of \u201cDoc\u00a0Tom\u201d Ferguson (1943-2006), a true visionary who foresaw decades ago that \u201ce-patients\u201d (empowered, engaged, equipped, enabled) would transform the future of health and care.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2018 marks the fortieth anniversary of Tom\u2019s graduation from medical school and his first published thoughts on medical self-care. In honor of the occasion SPM is creating the \u201cDoc\u00a0Tom\u201d Award, to recognize people and organizations whose work exemplifies what Tom\u00a0foresaw and advocated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Watch our blog for more news. Awards need criteria, and as members of the award team talked about it, we realized we really want two awards, for Tom&#8217;s work during his life and for what we&#8217;ve done with it since he passed in 2006. Here are the criteria for the two awards:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Award 1: e-Patient Principles<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For a person who exemplifies what Tom stood for during his lifetime &#8211; specifically, who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Advocates for self-care<\/strong> as an essential element of health and care<\/li>\n<li>Promotes either:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>access to and use<\/strong> of <strong>quality online information, services and tools<\/strong> to improve the health of individuals and population; and\/or<\/li>\n<li><strong>partnership <\/strong>between<strong> clinicians and patients\/caregivers\/families<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Serves as an <strong>innovator, pioneer, role model\u00a0and exemplar<\/strong> for genuine collaborative, participatory healthcare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Award 2: Contribution to SPM<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For a person who has significantly furthered the visibility and impact of our Society &#8211; someone who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Has served the Society for Participatory Medicine as a passionate leader or member,<\/strong> through valuable contribution(s) such as advocating for the cause, leading initiatives that drive and showcase collaboration and partnership between health professionals and people\/patients\/caregivers\/families, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Has demonstrated the ability to speak truth to power,<\/strong> challenging the status quo yet able to work with existing structures and teams, in an effort to achieve meaningful improvement in peoples\u2019 health and healthcare<\/li>\n<li>Serves as an <strong>innovator, pioneer, role model and exemplar<\/strong> for genuine collaborative, participatory healthcare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Anyone can nominate. Here&#8217;s how.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Send email to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:doctom@participatorymedicine.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doctom@participatorymedicine.org<\/a>\u00a0<strong>by August 31\u00a0<\/strong>specifying:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The person you&#8217;re nominating (self-nominations are welcome)<\/li>\n<li>Which award (e-Patient Principles or Contribution to SPM)<\/li>\n<li>How they meet the criteria.\u00a0 This should be convincing but doesn&#8217;t have to be any specific length.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Spread the word!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Again, this is an open nomination process.
