{"id":21588,"date":"2020-02-28T17:16:15","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T22:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/?p=21588"},"modified":"2020-03-03T09:16:34","modified_gmt":"2020-03-03T14:16:34","slug":"help-me-see-the-dragon-im-slaying-pathologists-meeting-directly-with-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/2020\/02\/help-me-see-the-dragon-im-slaying-pathologists-meeting-directly-with-patients.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Help me see the dragon I&#8217;m slaying&#8221;: pathologists meeting directly with patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Now <em>this <\/em>is patient-centered care.<\/h3>\n<p>This may be the most wonderful participatory innovation I&#8217;ve seen since OpenNotes in 2012.\u00a0 This one&#8217;s completely different: OpenNotes is about patient access to the medical record, but this one invites patients to <em>see their tissue samples<\/em>, simply so they can have a sense that their tumor is not something that&#8217;s unknowably beyond their experience. Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archivesofpathology.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.5858\/arpa.2018-0379-OA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the 2018 article about it<\/a>. (I speak from experience when I say there&#8217;s something inexpressably powerful about\u00a0<em>anything\u00a0<\/em>that lets me understand what&#8217;s happening. In my case it was viewing my CT scans in the OsiriX open source radiology viewer.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Started in 2017 by pathologist Dr. Lija Joseph at Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital (part of the Wellforce Healthcare system, with Tufts and Melrose Wakefield Hospital), the program has produced some heartwarming responses from patients age 13 to 86. Over 100 of them, so far.<\/p>\n<p>See Dr. Joseph and one of her patients on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcvb.com\/article\/see-the-dragon-that-im-slaying-hospital-opens-lab-to-cancer-patients\/14762594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this WCVB news clip<\/a> from 2018. Dr. Joseph read the story of famed lung cancer e-patient Linnea Olson <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/1111linno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@1111linno<\/a> (who also lives in Lowell), and thought to herself, &#8220;A patient in Lowell should be able to view an example of the type of her cancer in Lowell!&#8221; <em>This<\/em> is truly patient-centered thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Linnea lives not far from me so we&#8217;ve met; I reached out to her about this post and she said this about Dr. Joseph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She is incredibly gracious and I think this program is wonderful. When I finally got to see a slide of my own cancerous cells under a microscope, I found it so empowering.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It has always struck me as odd that I was not shown my original tumor (or at least images of it) &#8211; something that was part of me. I applaud Dr Joseph for demystifying a disease that is often anthropomorphized into &#8220;other&#8221;\u2014it is actually just our own cells run amok.
