{"id":674,"date":"2008-11-11T12:44:57","date_gmt":"2008-11-11T17:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pmedicine.org\/epatients\/?p=674"},"modified":"2009-01-17T15:48:15","modified_gmt":"2009-01-17T20:48:15","slug":"do-doctors-read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/participatorymedicine.org\/epatients\/2008\/11\/do-doctors-read.html","title":{"rendered":"Do Doctors Read?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, after monitoring e-patients.net and The Health Care Blog, I have to ask:\u00a0 Do doctors read?\u00a0 And if so, what?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I know four things from my own experience (and watching &#8220;Grey&#8217;s Anatomy&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>First, physicians are\u00a0busy often exhausted individuals who deal with life-and-death matters.\u00a0 For some, a robust sense of\u00a0importance, if not\u00a0their institutional setting,\u00a0makes them\u00a0deaf to patient input.\u00a0 The Work to the Max ethic and lifestyle is inculcated long before medical school.<\/p>\n<p>Second, physicians in\u00a0my daughter&#8217;s chain of medical events were highly resistant if not resentful of\u00a0patient input\u00a0regarding new sources of information, from medical to newspaper to\u00a0Internet articles.\u00a0\u00a0 Regardless of how tactfully the material was presented.<\/p>\n<p>Third, as is clear from my own posts, the ones I encountered don&#8217;t read <em>The New York Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth, the\u00a0doctors I know, when they do have leisure time, spend it\u00a0at the health club, on the ski slopes, at the theatre or flying jets.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t read for leisure and thus are unlikely to familiarize themselves with the irony, say, of Robert B. Parker&#8217;s <em>Spenser<\/em> novels.\u00a0 Irony is useful\u00a0here in that it, and the humor in <em>Spenser<\/em>, arises from the\u00a0skepticism of a\u00a0Single Joe dealing with\u00a0large, but not efficient,\u00a0corporate and government entities.<\/p>\n<p>So I raise the question:\u00a0 Do doctors read?\u00a0 And if so, what?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever they are reading, or not reading, seems to contribute to the ossification of attitude implicit in David Kibbe&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehealthcareblog.com\/the_health_care_blog\/2008\/11\/confessions-of.html\">recent post<\/a> on The Health Care Blog about his quest to urge physicians to adopt up-to-date Information Technology.\u00a0 Of all the entities involved in transformation of the health care system, the physician community seems least able to adapt to changing times.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, after monitoring e-patients.net and The Health Care Blog, I have to ask:\u00a0 Do doctors read?\u00a0 And if so, what?
