Dear Santa,<\/p>\n

I always believed in you Santa. All those kids who said it wasn\u2019t true, you weren\u2019t real, well guess what: I knew you were.<\/p>\n

I wanna tell you, Santa, life is hard for us e-health boys and girls.<\/p>\n

Trouble started last month.\u00a0 There was this article, \u201cLies, Damn Lies, and Medical Science<\/a>.\u201d Santa, you wouldn\u2019t believe it! They\u2019re trying to tell me that all that scientific medical evidence that come out of academic medical centers isn\u2019t all true. Just like you, Santa.<\/p>\n

It gets worse, Santa. A bunch of new people are saying bad things<\/a> about all those free e-health sites, you know, like AOLHealth<\/a>,\u00a0 Everyday Health<\/a>, HealthCentral<\/a>, Healthline<\/a>, <\/strong>MedHelp<\/a>, <\/strong>Patients Like Me<\/a>, QualityHealth<\/a>, WebMD<\/a>. At least they didn\u2019t mention one of my favorites, Mayo.com<\/a>., although they did throw in Google<\/a> and Microsoft<\/a> for good measure.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re right, Santa, I meant MayoClinic.com<\/a>. Yes, Santa, I know you love mayonnaise. And now I know you visit mayo.com all the time. I thought your tummy was from bowls full of jelly.<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s the thing, Santa: This group<\/a> has gone and told the government, you know, the FTC<\/a>, that these sites have been BAD, that all they get for Christmas is a lump of coal.<\/p>\n

Yesss\u2026 Santa, I know the coal industry doesn\u2019t advertise on health sites. Can I finish?<\/p>\n

O.k., so they\u2019re saying these free sites, aren\u2019t REALLY free Santa \u2013 that\u00a0 they\u2019re just tricking us. They get our names, Santa. Then they find out the stuff we think is interesting. Then they tell marketing people about us Santa.\u00a0 And they try and sell us stuff. Someone spends money and they make a profit so if someone\u2019s paying, it can\u2019t be free, right, Santa?<\/p>\n

What do you mean, Santa: \u201cHow do you know I’m not doing the same thing?\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re Santa, Santa!<\/p>\n

Wanna know just how bad these people are, Santa? You wouldn\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 They tell people to go read their privacy policies.\u00a0 Like, you know, the one on Patients Like Me<\/em>. I printed it out, Santa ,so you can see how bad they are, cause they say right on their home page that I can:<\/p>\n

Learn all about us<\/a>. Ask us anything. Why do we embrace openness<\/a>, and what about your privacy<\/a>? How do we make money<\/a> and who are our partners<\/a>? Take a moment to read this<\/a> and find out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So that\u2019s bad, right, Santa?\u00a0 I mean they say, \u201cWe take the information patients share about their experience with the disease, and sell it\u2026\u201d\u00a0 That sounds really bad, Santa. And these bad sites, Santa, are my friends, so that must make me bad too.<\/p>\n

Another thing, Santa. When I started Medscape<\/a> back in 1995 it was free too, and we told everyone they had to give us their names and we would know their interests and then they would get both noncommercial and<\/em> commercial information. I got lots of fan mail, saying it\u2019s good, Santa. Still do, even though I haven\u2019t been there for years. Never got a complaint. Millions of people of people say they love it, just like they love you.<\/p>\n

What do you mean, Santa, you think it\u2019s o.k., as long as they tell you what the deal is? And what do you mean, \u201cI work for Macy\u2019s?”<\/p>\n

Yes, Santa, I do want the train set. Those nice people at Macy\u2019s let you set up shop so you can find out who\u2019s been bad and who\u2019s been good.\u00a0 No, I wouldn\u2019t like it if I had to pay to see Santa. <\/strong><\/p>\n

So, Santa, if those academic studies are bad, if all these sites are bad, and you can tell the government on them, that must mean the government health sites are good, right Santa?<\/p>\n

No, I didn\u2019t know that in the 90s, the government\u2019s CDC site said that condoms were good, and then between 2002 and 2008 they said they were bad, and now they say they\u2019re good again.\u00a0 They must have heard it from the Pope. I hear he likes condoms<\/a> now, too.\u00a0 He\u2019s good like you, Santa. Or maybe we\u2019re all just fools, damn fools.<\/p>\n
