Update from the members of the Board: 

Dave DeBronkart, new book: Let Patients Help! With Dr. Danny Sands and introduction by Eric J. Topol  MD, published March 20, 2013.

Nancy Finn presented a webinar on patient engagement, jointly sponsored by HIMSS and SPM. She recently experienced first- hand what is it to be an e-patient at recent surgery and recovery which she blogged about on e-patients.net.

Terry Graedon outlined a series of editorials authored by the editors of the Journal including:

Participatory Diagnosis, by Alan Greene, May 22, looks at the high incidence of misdiagnosis and the complex reasons why this happens

A Model for the Future of Health Care, by Charlie Smith, Terry Graedon, Joe Graedon, Alan Greene, John Grohol, Danny Sands, May 16, 2013, focuses on the impact of participatory medicine on all aspects of health care.

The Real Problem with Misdiagnosis by Charlie Smith, April 2, 2013, about the value that an experienced physician brings to diagnosis and treatment of the patient.

Is Larry Weed Right by Terry Graedon, March 18, 2013, looks at the role of diagnostic software tools and misdiagnosis.

Patient Experience Outcomes and Participatory Medicine by Charlie Smith, Feb. 7, 2013, argues that optimal health outcomes are impossible without patient participation.

Joe Graedon has been working actively with The  Society to Improve Diagnosis, an organization committed to reducing  misdiagnosis and improving  patient safety and health care delivery for patients and their families..

Alan Greene is working with Scanadu in the Bay area creating a cuff-less blood pressure device to do instant blood pressure readings in way that puts data in people’s hands and connects them with their physician.

John Grohol has been working on updates to the Society’s word press for our web site and is actively involved in promoting an e-patient conference related to South by Southwest.

Sarah Krug recently joined the board of The National Organization of Rare diseases. Her work at Cancer 101 includes tailoring resources and navigation tools to launch a participatory framework that distributes resources to providers who bring them to patients at the point of care.

David Lansky has been involved in a large grant that would fund two state clinical models involving a chronically ill population. The grants would provide funds for training clinical staff in patient engagement, motivational interviewing, and identifying patient goals. David is also working with Choosing Wisely, focused on encouraging physicians, patients and other health care stakeholders to think and talk about medical tests and procedures that may be unnecessary, and in some instances can cause harm.

Deb Linton  is wrapping  up  her first year at UC Berkeley School of Information Management and Systems, where she will receive a  Masters degree  in Informatics. Her studies are focused on programming policy and design and the business aspects of technology in medicine.

Danny Sands recently presented at the American College of Physicians on engaging e-patients. He is working with Best Doctors on participatory medicine He is completing a contract with ONC on updates of the 1998 email guidelines, and serving as an advisor to HIMSS E-connecting with Consumers Committee. He also heads a task force for American Medical Informatics on the future of the organization.

Marcus Thygeson chief health officer of Blue Shield of CA is working on training Blue Shield CA members and clinicians on motivational interviewing, shared decision making, and improving use of a patient activation measures tool for assessing how people are empowered to act as their own agents in healthcare. He is also working with the clinical team to rebuild wellness programs and revamp the Blue Shield of CA web and mobile platforms. Marcus recently completed a chapter on Adaptive Health Practices, the application of adaptive leadership concepts to healthcare practice in a compendium that was published by Springer.

Barbara Kornblau completed two articles on participatory medicine as a way to promote the Society: one published in Pain Week magazine and the other in Case in Point. Barbara will be presenting at the IOM at conference on disciplinary education.

We are changing the conversation with participatory medicine mentions on the web on over 3.3 million web pages and e-patient mentions on 516 million web pages.

Financial/Membership report (as of May 1, 2013), John

432 active members 352 individuals

Membership growth is up 17% compared to the same quarter in 2012, the year over year growth rate we would expect.

Executive Director Report 

Proposed the establishment of five standing committees:

Finance and fundraising, this group would develop leads and research and solicit grants and create programs that would be income producing.

Membership and awards, this group would focus on expanding our members by a significant number by leveraging and capturing information from  people who read our Journal and others who are coming to our website for information; by creating  a  member benefits  brochure and developing a marketing plan to engage in an extensive membership drive. They would create an awards program to recognize those members who are making a significant contribution to participatory medicine.

Strategic planning and programs. This group would focus on the executing the pillars of the   society’s strategic plan and develop program that match those objectives.

PR and communications, this group would be responsible for branding and be concerned with maintaining brand consistency among the Society’s various programs including the web site, print collateral, the Seal program, etc. This group would also be responsible for all internal communications to the members as well as external communication, including press releases and other outreach communications as needed.

Policy and external relations, this group would review policies relevant to the work of the Society to be sure there is oversight as we expand our relationships and strategic alliances.

The Board voted to create the committee structure.
